Here are 5 TV shows or movies to get you in a delightfully spooky mood.

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “Hush”, Season 4, Episode 10. A fan favorite and critically acclaimed, you’ll appreciate the artistry and creepiness even if you aren’t a diehard Buffy fan. I showed this episode to my husband last Halloween. He had never seen an episode of Buffy, and he really enjoyed this one. Although the series also did Halloween-themed episodes, I prefer “Hush” for October. You can watch this one on Hulu, and fair warning, this episode contains adult content and is not suitable for children.
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). I remember my grade school teachers showing this to us every year as a special treat and I felt so grown up that I was allowed to watch a “horror” movie. Unfortunately I could not find this available to stream, but perhaps you can find the DVD at your library.

  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Ok, not spooky, but a must-watch at Halloween. Available to rent on Amazon for $3.99 (affiliate link).

  • Stranger Things, “Trick or Treat, Freak”, Season 2, Episode 2. Flashback to trick or treating in the ‘80s, poignant, and scary at the same time. Only available on Netflix.

  • Any episode from The Twilight Zone. You might do the most famous one, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” (Season 5, Episode 3), but the one that scared the pants off of me was “Living Doll” (Season 5, Episode 6)…you know, the “Talking Tina” episode. The Twilight Zone is currently available to stream on both Netflix and Hulu.
