Prepare homework areas, school bags, etc. for each child for the upcoming school year. Having a neat and organized area for homework and papers from the school will help keep everyone focused and on task this year.

In most places you probably don’t need to do your normal school shopping for clothes, backpacks, lunch bags. Instead, focus on the study area, as kids will probably be home. If you live in a small space, you can use a tri-fold (science fair) board to make a study carrel that folds flat when you’re not using it. These are typically available at the craft store and office supply store, or you can find one on Amazon here (affiliate link). If you order from Amazon, check the sizing and make sure you’re getting a nice large one. Let your kid decorate the board with paints or markers. One of my kids has a white study carrel she painted in rainbow colors, and the other kid has black one that she decorated with white paint to look like the night sky. When the kids are done with their work we can fold the boards flat and store them behind our kitchen pantry.

Things may not be the same this year, but do what you can to make it fun and festive. Shopping for school clothes or a uniform could still be appropriate as well, since some people perform better when they are actually dressed (not wearing pajamas or similar). Everyone is different, but if a new outfit could motivate your child to sit at her home school desk, then have some fun shopping for it.

Can a child have too many gifts? Consider saving a couple of the children’s gifts for your emergency gift closet, rather than putting every single thing under the tree. Here is a story of my own, to help illustrate. I have 2 young daughters, a year apart in age. When...
