Prepare a swimming “go bag” and leave it in your car for impromptu stops at beaches, swimming pools (if you are lucky enough to live someplace they are open), or spray parks.

I have a tote bag in the back of my car packed with sunscreen, towels, and spare swimsuits (the ones that are on their way out the door). I even have some dollar store flip-flops in the bag. But that is because one time I drove my kids on an errand and found that one of them was barefoot when I arrived at my destination. Still, the flip flops come in handy at spray parks too.

Add some sun hats and squirt toys too, and really make it magical.

Finally, if your nearby water park is a sandy beach, make sure your bag includes baby powder or cornstarch (from the baking aisle) to rub on skin to get sand off when you are done playing.

If you don’t do impromptu water stuff, then try packing bubbles and sidewalk chalk in the car to surprise kids at their next visit to the playground.
