One rainy Halloween, my kids came up with this alternative to trick-or-treating. They asked me to hide candy Easter egg hunt style, around our home. We ended up getting out the plastic Easter eggs and the kids decorated the orange and purple ones with Halloween stickers that we already had on hand.

Then I set up the hunt. They had a ball and were really happy not having to head out in the pouring rain.

They also suggested another alternative to me, that you might try as well. They asked me to hide pennies instead of candy or eggs, and then they would use the found pennies to purchase candy (from my stash). They got this idea because our local swimming pool did a “penny dive” on Halloween where they would throw tons of pennies into the pool and let the kids trade them for candy. But the same rainy Halloween, the swimming pool was closed for an extended paint job, and so my kids were out of luck on the penny dive.

We ended up doing Easter (Halloween) eggs instead of pennies, but if you have older kids, the penny hunt may be more of a fun challenge.
