The literary quote above is by F. Scott Fitzgerald, from The Great Gatsby.

Life is getting more hectic this month. Summer is over and the school year begins. Many people consider September to be a second “New Year” because of this, even if they don’t have school-age children. September just brings that feeling with it. This can be exciting and inspiring, but still brings chores and to-do lists as we taxi kids around and prepare our homes and calendars for the holidays ahead. This week we will start checking off some of those items that are not quite magical, but still help us get ready for the upcoming season. At the same time, we’ll also be making sure to schedule time for ourselves and reflect on what’s important to us.

Next Sunday is Grandparent’s Day. If you or your children want to celebrate, think about how you might want to do that. A phone call from the grandkids is the most appreciated gesture in our family. You could also order flowers or balloons for delivery, or have your kids draw something and pop it in the mail.

On Friday I will be sharing a great recipe for slow cooker apple butter. Apples are in season now and my family loves to go to a u-pick farm and choose our own varieties. If you are following along in real time and you want to do this on Friday or this weekend, you’ll need apples, sugar, and the usual fall spices such as cinnamon and ground cloves. This recipe is specifically for a slow cooker, so you’ll need one of those, and an immersion blender will be ideal to have as well.

Have a great week!

No Screen Day

Invoke a “no-screen day” once a week in your home. For your kids, and yourself as well. One day a week there is to be no TV, no video games, no tablets, no computer screens, no phones. It may be difficult at first, but stick to it. I promise you will love the results....
